The History of Montessori Education

Montessori education began in 1907 when Maria Montessori opened the Casa dei Bambini, or Children’s House, in a working-class district of Rome. Her innovative philosophy quickly captured the attention of educators around the world, leading to the establishment of Montessori schools across Europe, North and South America, and eventually on every continent except Antarctica.

Books and Articles on Maria Montessori

Numerous books and articles about Montessori have been published in almost every language.

Dr. Montessori first outlined her approach in Il Metodo della Pedagogia Scientifica applicato all’educazione infantile nelle Case dei Bambini, published in 1909. The book’s English translation, titled The Montessori Method, was a resounding success on both sides of the Atlantic.

Original Montessori Association

In 1929, Dr. Montessori founded the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) to support the growing number of Montessori schools, teacher training programs, and national organizations worldwide.

Montessori Education in the U.S.

n the United States, Montessori gained rapid popularity, driven by influential advocates and positive media coverage. However, by the 1920s, the movement lost momentum, and it would take another 40 years before Montessori schools reemerged in significant numbers.

The driving force behind the American revival was Nancy McCormick Rambusch, a passionate and persuasive educator committed to creating change. In 1960, Dr. Rambusch founded the American Montessori Society, the first and still the largest organization supporting Montessori education in the U.S. during the modern era.
